Asher Lev And Matisse

This post is adapted and slightly expanded from a post written in 2011 on one of my old blogs.
Quote from "My Name Is Asher Lev", by Chaim Potok: "His art is not enjoyable. He is not Matisse." That was my introduction to Henri Matisse, whose art I find extremely enjoyable.
I love it when a book leads me to something new, and that seems to happen fairly often.

A Good Cup Of Coffee?

Originally posted in 2018 on one of my old blogs.

I’ve often said, “Boy, could I use a good cup of coffee,” but is that expression really accurate? What do I mean when I say that I could use a good cup of coffee? Am I talking about the quality of the coffee, or the cup?
If I have lousy coffee in, for example, a fine china cup, am I having a good cup of bad coffee? If, on the other hand, I have a delicious cup of coffee, the kind of coffee one drinks slowly and savors, in a cup with a chip in it, am I having a lousy cup of good coffee?
Perhaps, instead of “a good cup of coffee,” the expression should be “a cup of good coffee.”
I’m just saying.

Book Review, And A Personal Revelation

https://thedailyspur.wordpress.com/2026/01/25/write/

There are so many things I could have written for today's prompt, and it took me quite some time to narrow it down to just one, but I finally decided to share a review of Beverly Cleary's "Muggie Maggie" which I posted on Amazon way back
in 2002. It includes some information about me, which makes it perfect for this blog.

And now, after that intro, the review itself!

This book, while well-written, does not quite come up to the quality of many of Beverly Cleary's other works, for example, the Henry Huggins books, the Ramona series, Ellen Tebbits, Otis Spofford, and Emily's Runaway Imagination.
The main character, Maggie, is a third-grade girl who rebels against learning to write cursive, partly because she doesn't like the way it looks.
Of course, her refusal causes great concern among the adults in Maggie's life. Maggie even has to see the principal and the school psychologist.
Things seem to be at an impasse, and then Maggie's teacher, Mrs. Leeper, comes up with a clever way of motivating Maggie to learn cursive...
she makes her the note monitor, and leaves the notes unsealed, knowing that Maggie will peek at them. These notes were, for the most part, amusing. One of them, however, brought back some very painful childhood memories.
"Maggie is now reading cursive. I saw her reading what I had written on the chalkboard. If she can read it, she can write it."
Now, while this was true in Maggie's case, and would be true for many others, there are also those who can read it, but, for some reason or other, cannot write cursive, and sometimes have difficulty with printing as well.
I'm one of these people. I was reading several years above my grade level, but my handwriting was terrible, due, in my case, to a perceptual-motor disablity which wasn't diagnosed until just before I entered the sixth grade. I was often scolded and shamed in front of my classmates:
"There is no excuse for someone who reads as well as you do to have such poor handwriting. You're just not trying. Shame on you!"
Kudos to Mrs. Leeper for NOT shaming Maggie in front of her classmates. And kudos to Beverly Cleary for having some adults in the book with less than perfect penmanship. Finally, kudos to Beverly Cleary for creating a new character for this book. I doubt that it would have worked as part of the Ramona series.
I've given this book three stars, not because of my childhood memories, but because, as I said at the beginning of this review, while well-written, it does not quite come up to the quality of many of Beverly Cleary's other works.

Shameless Plug For A Future Post:
The prompt given today will also be included in the next Saturday Night Song List.

I Loved Going To The Dentist

Originally posted in 2011 on one of my old blogs.

Yep! When I was a kid, my friends and I loved going to the dentist. His office was right on my block, so I went at least once a week, sometimes by myself, sometimes with one or more of my friends. Either way, I always had a great time there.
You see, Dr. Kopel (that was his name, but after all these years I'm not sure I'm spelling it right) had a storeroom full, and I mean FULL, of comic books, including many that the corner candy store didn't carry, and he didn't care how much
time his young friends spent reading them.
So I really enjoyed going to the dentist... except when I had to go to the dentist!

A Story I'd Like To Share

It gives me spicy pleasure (see this earlier post) to share this story by E. M. Kingston.

My New Handy, All-Purpose Word

In Ethelyn M. Parkinson's children's novel, Never Go Anywhere With Digby, another book I plan to re-read soon, the main character and his friends use "vivid" as their handy, all-purpose word. The idea of having such a word appealed to me, and for several years I used "vivid" in that way on my old blog.
Well, now that I have this new blog, I've decided to also have a new word, and that word is spicy.
But I will NOT be changing the name of this blog to My Spicy Blog, because that might make people think it has adult content, or is about actual spices!

I used "vivid" only on my old blog, but I plan to use "spicy" in person as well.
And sometimes, when I'm talking or blogging about food, "spicy" may actually mean "spicy!"

Yes, I think having a handy, all-purpose word is a very spicy idea!

RE: Prompt Of The Day

Starting tomorrow, January 23rd, the Prompt Of The Day will be posted
(pre-scheduled!) at 12:30 AM Eastern Time.

Rediscovered Game

I've recently rediscovered Gold Miner Vegas, a game I used to play on my old computer.
Back then, I often made it to Vegas, but so far I haven't this time around.
But there are a few things I've learned:
Don't waste gold on a Lucky Clover. It doesn't change what's in the Grab Bags.
Don't bother with the Titanium Cable until you've gotten to the 7th level in Australia.
Don't try to collect the four jewels to get something special in the levels that offer them unless you've already made it to the next level.

One thing I love is that the graphics and goals for the levels change from
one game to another.

Prompt Of The Day/Disgruntled

Every day, I will post a prompt, usually one word, but sometimes a phrase or a sentence.

Today’s prompt is disgruntled.

A Squirrelly Post

I've just learned that today is National Squirrel Day, so here are some things I want to share:

In the extremely funny, and also thought-provoking children's book, "Me And The Weirdos," by Jane Sutton, the main character's mother calls herself Squirrel.  I plan to re-read this book in the near future

When I was a little girl, I had this record by The Nutty Squirrels, which I played over and over. Drove my Mom crazy! (Or should I say "nutty?")

And I've always loved this poem, which was written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and is in the public domain.

Fable

The mountain and the squirrel
Had a quarrel;
And the former called the latter ‘Little Prig.’
Bun replied,
‘You are doubtless very big;
But all sorts of things and weather
Must be taken in together,
To make up a year
And a sphere.
And I think it no disgrace
To occupy my place.
If I'm not so large as you,
You are not so small as I,
And not half so spry.
I'll not deny you make
A very pretty squirrel track;
Talents differ; all is well and wisely put;
If I cannot carry forests on my back,
Neither can you crack a nut.’

A Post I'd Like To Share

I can't resist sharing this post from a popular blogger who goes by the name
Fandango.
I highly recommend his blog.

Soup Label From 1900

Originally posted in 2018 on one of my old blogs. Updates are in italics.

I read an interesting label online the other day, and re-read today, a Campbell’s Tomato Soup label from 1900. It has some significant differences from their current label, and I learned some things I didn’t know before.

In those days, the company was known as The Joseph Campbell Preserve Co. Some of the varieties of soup they made then have been discontinued, such as Mock Turtle and the two listed below, neither of which I had heard of until I read the label.

Mulligatawny Soup, which is of East Indian origin. [The name may be translated as pepper water!] There doesn’t seem to be one set recipe for this soup, but apparently curry is a standard ingredient.

Printanier Soup, a soup made with spring vegetables.

There are other soups which Campbell’s has stopped making, but Tomato Soup is still going strong more than a hundred years after they introduced it.

I really enjoyed reading this label; it’s always fun learning new things.

Quiet Times, Noisy Times

https://wordofthedaychallenge.wordpress.com/2024/05/22/volume/

There are times and places when it is best, and considerate, to be silent.
In a sickroom.
At the library.
When someone else is speaking.
At the movies.
While playing Charades.
At certain musical events

Then again, there are times when noise is more fitting.
At a rock concert.
While attending a game, or watching it on TV.
(You should hear me when I'm watching the
Brooklyn Nets!)
When singing with family and/or friends.
At an amusement park.
While playing certain outdoor games.

In other words, there are times for "indoor voices"
and times for "outdoor voices", times to keep the
music low, and times to pump up the volume!

Prompt Of The Day/Nostalgia

Today’s prompt is nostalgia.

Have You Ever Eaten The Bark Of A Tree?

This was originally posted in 2018 on one of my old blogs.

Did you shake your head when you read the above question? After all, who’d want to eat the bark of a tree? Think of the splinters, and, probably, the insects! Eat the bark of a tree? YECH! I’d have to wash it very thoroughly before I’d even consider putting it into my mouth.

That, at least, would have been my reaction until I learned that cinnamon, which I love, comes from the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum. Cinnamomum Verum is the type that is considered to be true cinnamon. This, however, is not the kind that is usually sold. That honor, if I may call it an honor, goes primarily to several related species which are called Cassia to distinguish them from true cinnamon.

So yes, I have eaten the bark of a tree, and quite often at that! Still, tree-bark toast does not sound very appealing or appetizing.

I’m just saying.

Prompt Of The Day/Prompt

Every day, I will post a prompt, usually one word, but sometimes a phrase or a sentence.

Today’s prompt is prompt.

And I Thought I Was A Reader!

I’ve always thought of myself as a reader, and a voracious, insatiable reader at that. But I have to admit that Storm Novelo, a character in Dandi Daley Mackall’s “Blog On” series, out-reads me by a gazillion-bazillion-mazillion!

I read books, magazines, online articles, and things of that sort. Storm reads all these things as well, but she also reads, to quote from “storm rising”:

“encyclopedias, hospital brochures, bulletin boards, medical sites on the Internet…cereal boxes, car instruction manuals, labels on household cleaning products, and the fine print on everything.”

Inspired by Storm, I started doing that when I had the blog where this post was originally published … reading things like boxes, packages, and labels, and I’ve decided to start reading them again. I haven’t done so lately.

And once in a while, I will review a box, a package, or a labelor reprint a review from the old blog.
So don’t be surprised if you see a post with the words, “I read a great label today!”

I Love Music, All Kinds Of Music

This is adapted from a post I wrote in 2008 on one of my old blogs.

One thing I've always disliked about record clubs (or whatever they're called now)is that they require you to join in a specific category.Well, I'd rather not have my musical tastes pigeon-holed. In one day, I can listen to many different kinds of music.
So what are some of my favorite musical genres? Note, I said SOME; I'm sure I won't be able to list them all.
I love rock oldies, classical music, Klezmer, Motown, jazz, country, hymns, show tunes, novelty piano (e.g. "Kitten On The Keys"), big band music, folk songs, nursery tunes (note: John Lennon loved "Three Blind Mice," but my favorites in this category are "Oranges and Lemons," and "Boys And Girls, Come Out To Play.")
Actually, I don't concern myself too much with genres and categories. I just enjoy listening to a variety of music, and that's that.

A Long-Forgotten Song

I remember watching Sesame Street with my niece when she was a
little girl, and I'm sure I'm not the only adult who also watched it by myself. Well, Fandango's prompt reminded me of this song, which I somehow hadn't thought about in years!

A New Blog From An Old Blogger

I've been blogging for many years, and writing for much longer.
So why start yet another blog?
Because change is good.
Because I like starting new things.
So will this blog contain material from my older blogs?
Definitely.
Will it have new posts?
Of course!
Will there be links to other people's posts?
Absolutely.
You never can tell WHAT will show up here!
(See? I DO know how to spell it!)
So why the different spelling?
Just for fun.

Prompt Of The Day/Xylophone

Every day, I will post a prompt, usually one word, but sometimes a phrase or a sentence. Today’s prompt is xylophone . Write a post, any kin...
